This visualisation provides a comparative look at Myanmar’s news and information media landscape, including media
companies/organisations, platforms, ownership, language, location, and the history of foundings and closures.
It focuses on the political opening period (2010-2019), but also includes pre-opening data. All of the outlets
included operate inside the country; some are also cross-border, and/or have offices, partners and owners abroad.
The visualisation was created by Jane Madlyn McElhone
with technical and design assistance from Phandeeyar and InSpiral.
The content was updated in 2019 with assistance from Myint Kyaw.
Oliver Spencer assisted with data analysis.
The Snapshots in History section draws upon research conducted by The Irrawaddy and
Myanmar Media in Transition: Legacies, Challenges, and Change, as well as other sources. Various media outlets gave us
permission to use their photographs.
The visualisation is best viewed on a desktop or laptop computer using the Chrome web browser.

The The Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) supported the final development and updating of the visualisation and
published it in August 2019. While endeavouring to be comprehensive and accurate, the information is not exhaustive due
to the large number of outlets in Myanmar, the transitional nature of the sector, a generalised inconsistency of data and
lack of transparency, and, in some cases, a lack of data. MDIF welcomes your feedback and updates. Please write to the
